Stephen Webster: a poet and we didn’t know it!

Stephen Webster is of course a fabulous jewellery designer - of that there is no doubt. But when we at Retail Jeweller magazine went to see the launch of his latest Jewels Verne collection last night, we also discovered his talents as a poet.

We were invited to see the new pieces - which I officially fell in love with - at EC One in Notting Hill last night (which will be the first retailer to sell the pieces), hosted by the lovely Jos and Alison and with plenty of champagne and vodka flowing.  Punk poet John Cooper Clarke was also there, who treated the crowd to some of his own material (luckily it seemed there was no one there who was too easily offended!)

For those of you who missed the event but would like to read Stephen’s poem, read on…

Jewellery Man by Stephen Webster

I am a jewellery man
I have no master plan
When all is told if it’s made of gold
I am the man who can

When asked by many for whom do I sing
I reply no-one I am the King of Bling
Acoustic guitar I would love to play
But heavy metal has become my way

A life in fashion must be nice
But not a patch on peddling ice
A bunch of flowers are good to send
If only diamonds weren’t a girl’s best friend

For some brass knuckles will do the job
But it’s gold for me I’m a jewellery snob
To leave an impression on someone’s chin
Four sovereign rings will guarantee a win

Platinum’s more precious we know it is
But to me 9ct is the real showbiz
Those Europeans may consider it trash
But here we Brits demand flash for cash

It’s my business to add some lustre
To just about any unkempt cluster
Come upstairs and see me jewels
You’d be surprised who that one fools

There is a pearl necklace for the one
Who wants to come and join in the fun
Even though I make gold rings
My skills are spread over many things

No matter what it is that you pursue
There are ups and downs you know it’s true
So for the times that don’t go to plan
You can always count on the jewellery man
