No trees, No future
“Everyone loves a tree,” wrote Joseph Rykwert in a recent issue of the AJ, where he extolled the importance of trees in the public realm. Here’s a good source of technical information related to urban trees.
The Trees and Design Action Group’s first sets of guidelines (Trees in New Developments and The Value of Trees) were launched as a third sector green paper at the House of Commons late last year. The full document with case studies and consultation response survey is available on line until 30 April 2009. These guidelines are important and may be endorsed by DCLG. This survey takes literally ten minutes to do and although the first few questions seem self-evident, some of the more detailed ones further on are a good reminder of some of the issues related to trees that it’s easy to skim over.
The target audience for the guidelines is planners, developers and designers. The Trees and Design Action Group is particularly keen to engage with architects and urban designers who have a key role to play in the future of urban trees.
