The NOVA vertical wind turbine

Unlike its Spanish translation, NOVA or Project Novel Offshore Vertical Axis is definitely a goer as it was one of four projects benefiting from a £20million grant from the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI).

The plan is for 1 GW of offshore vertical axis turbines to be installed by 2020, via a large scale demonstrator installed offshore within six years.

Guests at a lecture by Dr. David Clarke, chief executive officer at ETI, hosted by Cranfield University last night were treated to a view of the huge vertical NOVA turbine.

Cranfield, along with Sheffield and Strathclyde Universities form part of the project team alongside technology solutions provider QinetiQ and the developer of the unique turbine, Wind Power Limited. The project is managed by Guildford offshore energy specialists OTM Consulting.
