Biosphere home farm

This is the newst concept from Philips Design Probes, a research team looking into the future of ‘lifestyle’ after 2020.

The Biosphere home farm, above, is a concept of mini eco-system that could provide one part of our daily recommended calorific intake. The upright tower, suitable for small flats and kitchens, utilises five eco-systems, each on different layers. These include: a bottom level for the disposal of organic waste, above that a level of algae, then comes a section for fish and shrimp, with the top two tiers used for plants and herbs.

The main attraction is that this scaled-down farm would not require electricity, only water, organic waste and the sun’s energy. Foods such as lettuce, cucumber, shell fish, herbs and spices will be produced.
