Sustainable building training charity RESET has partnered with  Living Roofs,  AECB, CIRIA, Forum for the Future and others to launch the Integrated Habitat Design Competition (IHDC) which seeks to promote inspiring and innovative designs which emphasise nature and biodiversity in the built environment.

Individuals and teams can enter any building project, large or small, that has been constructed anywhere in the UK.

Blanche Cameron, director of RESET said, ‘We were inspired by a competition run in Portland, Oregon, in 2008 - Integrating Habitats. This competition drew out high quality designs that showed our relationship with nature, and the potential to adapt cities and towns to climate change as well as maintain diverse natural habitats - going beyond landscaped parks. Something similar was needed for the UK, cutting across architecture, engineering, landscape design and ecology.’  Winning schemes from the Portland, Oregon competition may be viewed here.

IHDC was launched at Ecobuild and participants have until June 30th to enter. Winners will be announced at the World Green Roofs Congress on the 15th and 16th of September and finalists’ schemes will be exhibited at the Building Centre.

We need much more of this type of cross-disciplinary thinking.
