Canning Town Caravanserai

Ash Sakula’s Canning Town Caravanserai (CTC) is a resident-led social enterprise in Canning Town, one of four winning entries to Newham’s Meanwhile London competition.  The location is a 6000 m2 vacant brownfield site on Silvertown Way, opposite Canning Town DLR and Tube Station. The aim is to create a place of trade and micro-economies, where people can meet and share knowledge and skills.  The physical support for these activities is envisioned as a series of public squares enclosed by stalls - or pods - occupied by various community groups and enterprises.

Why Caravanserai?

Ancient middle eastern caravanserais were roadside inns where travellers could rest during journeys, supporting the flow of commerce, information, and people across a network of global trade routes. The site’s location near the Olympic Park will be used to promote the project in order to help the local community benefit socially and economically.

How can you get involved:

  • Follow Caravanserai’s blog to keep up to date with the project
  • Get in touch with the team for future volunteering opportunites
  • Attend upcoming events put on by the CTC team.

The project will be constructed this summer by a group put together by AshSakula and the CTC team.
