I love these graphics because they put the UK’s low carbon agenda in a global context. Interesting to note that the UAE’s per capita C02 emissions are four times the UK and twice the US. Brings home the context in which Masdar is being built.

One of the more memorable and revealing outings while I was in Abu Dhabi was a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. When you see the scale of the mosque which was built in ten years, Masdar seems possible.

While at Masdar, I spent half a day on site at Central Market - a massive project in downtown Abu Dhabi which aims to give the downtown a civic heart and become Abu Dhabi’s premier address.

Following the early press viewings of Masdar’s first building, one component of Foster and Partners’ student accommodation blocks has drawn particular interest – the glass reinforced concrete (GRC) balcony screens.

I am in the departure lounge for UAE’s 6 year-old Etihad Airlines with free wifi. My stay in Abu Dhabi concluded with a dinner with 7 Fosters’ architects in the rooftop bar of Asymptope’s hotel on Yas Island - soon to be home to Ferrari World.

Masdar’s first building is Foster and Partners’ student accommodation for post-graduates at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology due to complete by September.

One aspect of Foster and Partners’ master plan for Masdar that I had not fully appreciated is that the city is built on a podium above a service level dedicated to transport and services. Private cars will be parked at the edge of the 6 km square city and residents will move around using PRT.
