Retail Week, today
Avocadon’t
Our back page story in Friday’s issue pointing out that Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s both appeared to be taking the credit for introducing the avocado to UK shoppers in the current nostalgiafest of anniversary advertising caused a stir. M&S now seems to have backed down, saying it never intended to suggest it introduced the avocado, just that it sold them, like every other supermarket.
That clearly isn’t the implication of the ad though, but I suppose it would be a bit of a performance to edit Twiggy and the avocado bathroom suite out of it. Shame, as it’s otherwise a very good ad, with a bit more life about it than the rather sober Sainsbury’s one.
On the subject of M&S, yet again, apparently the chief executive’s role there is one of the many offers likely to come flooding in to Kim Winser, along with the top job at Versace and quite possibly governor of the Bank of England, Prime Minister and Queen of England rolled into one. We revealed on Friday that she was leaving Aquascutum, and looking back over the weekend headlines, I can’t believe how good her PR is.
You’d be hard pushed to find in any of the articles over the weekend any mention of the company’s giant losses, and the source who told me the story in the first place said they were amazed she’d lasted so long working for the venerable brand’s Japanese owners. Hopefully she’ll resurface in an exciting role somewhere soon, but my prediction is that whoever the new CEO of M&S is, it’s unlikely to be her.
