Wasn’t it hard coming back to work in the freezing cold after what was almost a two week break for most of us? Hope you managed to recharge your batteries because whatever industry you, your family or friends work in, there is no getting away from the fact that 2009 is going to be tough. But if you work for a local council I can imagine the Daily Mail really made for a black Monday. It painted a picture of an industry in crisis with recycling at a standstill, paper mountains all over the country and taxpayers footing the extra cost. If you have spent your entire career desperately trying to muster support for recycling it must have been heartbreaking. At least the LGA has sprung to their defence to say that it is simply not the case. But the damage to public confidence will take a lot longer to repair. What a start to the year!
Here at RWM we see it as part of our job description to support the industry – it’s what we have been doing since the show was established. We are realistic and hear first hand from our exhibitors how their businesses have been affected. Certainly markets are unrecognisable compared to this time last year, but despite this we are still taking new stand bookings (15 in December alone). We hope this is a barometer of the resilience of recycling. If you need a boost, take a look at the latest exhibitor list and remind yourself what a diverse and vibrant industry you work in!
