Did you see Viridor’s chief executive in Undercover Boss on Channel 4 recently? For those of us in the industry it made really compelling viewing. The issues he came across were not just confined to Viridor but applied to the industry as a whole: Health & Safety, staff welfare and retention, public apathy to recycling and over-filled bins.
Despite all the technological developments of recent years there are many jobs in recycling that are still hard, physical work. One of the staff working at the C&D recycling site joked that his job was like a “prison sentence,” which was a harsh reminder to any of us lucky enough to work in centrally heated offices. Of course there were many positives too, and reminders of why we are all so passionate about working in recycling. If only the staff at my local Household Waste & Recycling Site were more like the smiley, committed ones which featured in the programme!
If any of these issues struck a chord with you, please do come along to RWM this year to find out what new solutions are being launched and share best practice with your industry peers. The Health & Safety Executive will be talking about their work with local authorities, there will be many exhibitors showcasing bin weighing technology and recruitment specialists like Smart Solutions Recruitment who have experience in recruiting, incentivising and retaining staff.
And do pop along to Cafe Viridor to tell them what you thought of the programme and see if you can get any autographs!
