pre-Christmas sales going well at John Lewis

John Lewis has added fuel to hopes that this year will be a great Christmas for retailers by unveiling encouraging figures that show a 9.1 per cent rise in year-on-year sales.

The department store - viewed as a bellweather by the retail trade - reported that: “seasonal purchasing kicked off strongly in some parts of the country.” London in particular fared well, with Peter Jones seeing a 8.4 per cent rise and John Lewis in Bluewater - one of the UK’s best-performing shopping centres - notching up 13.5 per cent more.

John Lewis’ sister company, the supermarket Waitrose, is also feeling the festive cheer after gift sales were up 133 per cent on the week to October 24 2008, while demand for Christmas cake was up by 28 per cent. Toiletries and mugs were the most popular gifts for this retailer, with sales shooting up by 80 per cent and 97 per cent respectively.

Several retailers, including John Lewis, benefitted from a much better Christmas period in 2009, then they did in 2008. However, only time will tell if the apparent green shoots of recovery in the retail sector can be sustained into 2010 and beyond.

Of course the snow didn`t help early January sales figures. Will be interesting to see if figures pick up for the end of the month. John Lewis well placed for the future I think.

Nevertheless, thinking about the falling dollar, Saudi Arabia and Iran are also taking into consideration to shift their trades to Euro to profit their enterprises. The entire world can only wait around and see what transfer the US helps make following. Would it stand by and view its supreme authority wash absent or would it, like Iraq, invade other countries which would surely fuel a entire world war.
